The first official Oktoberfest took place in 1810, and over the decades, it's
evolution has become the impressive annual event that it is today.
It was Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, who was later crowned King Ludwig the first that had
the idea of inviting the good townspeople of Munich to the celebration of
his marriage to the beautiful Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on
a wonderous autumn day of October 12, 1810.
To commemorate this majestic grand regional event, Prince Ludwig organized a horse
race to add to this marital celebration and invited all
who wished to attend with open arms.
The royal party itself drew about 40,000 guests which by todays standards was very
impressive.
The present day Oktoberfest event begins 16 days prior to the first Sunday in
October. Now
if that Sunday happens to fall on October 1st
or on the 2nd, then the festival is automatically extended through the 3rd, on
German Unity Day.
